Over 50 years ago, trans people of colour fought hard for our rights in the Stonewall riots, yet to this day, places such as Manchester still do not truly represent those who fought so hard.
A city so diverse, modern and progressive by the looks but in reality this city has never seen an openly transgender politician. I say that we can do so much better. Let's get Manchester's first openly trans person of colour elected.
Right now, people of colour and trans people are two of the most marginalised groups in society. Our voices still are not heard as loudly and clearly as those of white, cisgender voices.
According to Stonewall, more than 1 in 4 trans people have attempted suicide, with 9 in 10 thinking about it. This should not be the case in our modern society, but sadly it is. However, we can change this by fighting harder than ever before.
The Labour party nor the Conservatives will make any real progressive change to our society, so we as Liberal Democrats must.
Manchester's first openly trans person of colour being elected to public office is on the horizon. Make no mistake, whether it takes 5 years or 15 years, it will happen and it will send progressive shockwaves.
